Hi Fisho's, As we enter July we can expect more winter action in our rivers similar to our last month which involved some great bream fishing in the deeper water and some really excellent catches of Flathead in the shallows. Definitely do not think Flathead are only a summer months species as they are definitely around and still need to feed. Water temps have not dropped too severely as yet with most days holding between 15 to 16 deg. This time of year our techniques for chasing your desired species are a fair bit different to our summer approach.
Bream have definitely been a prime target and they haven't let us down with some great captures using one of my all time favourites the Samaki Vibelicious "Whitebait pattern" soft vibe, (smearing it with crab Sax scent doesn't hurt either!) there is no doubt this lure has been a standout again this year and believe me i do use other lures and colours this is a winner and proves itself repeatedly on Castaway.
Flathead have been taking plastics readily but also suspending hard bodied lures which has been a ton of fun. On a recent guide to the Macleay river, SWR my client had a great session catching and releasing many quality fish on the Daiwa "double clutch" these lures and similar ones are great in the shallows and you can have a ball watching flatties race out to hit your lure! Interestingly the better sized fish are on the hard lures recently.
Mulloway trips have been limited the last month with everyone wanting to chase little silvers, but we did get a couple on recent trips again using vibes was the method to bring them undone hopefully we get a few more trips in this month for these great fish.
A couple of special fishing memories were added since my last blog with a few trips on Castaway to Copeton dam producing my wife Mandy with her first metre Murray cod on a Koolabung surface lure, I had to wait till our next trip to catch mine and while only a 60 plus version I was happy to get the duck off the back, we will return again later in the year for another crack at these incredible fish.
To all the fisho"s that fish with Castaway in September for Bass in the fresh and Jewfish in the salt, if you are planning a trip the diary is starting to fill up so bookings are essential. That's about it people so hope to catch ya on the water, cheers
